Slingerland rock kit

I’m trying to restore my dad’s 1970s Slingerland rock kit. Has a 14 X24 bass drum and a set-o-matic double Tom holder. If I set up the kit with the Tom holder on the batter side of the bass drum ( badge on the resonant side) the double bass drum spurs are pointed in the wrong direction. Doesn’t make sense to me. Every pic I can find of vintage Slingerland drums has the Tom holder on the batter side of the drum. I don’t understand. Certainly I can flip the drum around and put the Tom holder on the resonant side but that just doesn’t seem correct.
