How Can I Remove Scratches from Drum Wrap?

by DEAN CROUSE
(ONTARIO CAN)

I've purchased 1990 black pearl exports with new skins. They are awesome miked or not. However their age is apparent. If you look closely, there are many what look like abrasions swirls scratches. They look to be only surface. Can these be buffed out? Also. the bass drum has a little bit of bubbling in one spot like the wrap has come loose. do i recover the drums or can this little issues be resolved another way? thanks

ANSWER

Hi, Dean--

You can try buffing out the scratches. Some recommend "Mothers California Gold Sealer & Glaze". If you try this, do it by hand rather than with an electric buffer.

You might be able to carefully get some glue under the area of the bass drum that is bubbling, Make a VERY small incision and carefully apply glue with a small object, being careful not to get glue on the outside of the wrap.

Try these options first and then if the result is not satisfactory, you may want to recover or refinish.
